How to take beautiful photos of your business!

Your work speaks for itself. But how do you share that work in an impactful and beautiful way?

Photos of your business are an excellent way of marketing your brand and service. We're all after that perfect Instagram shot of our client’s brand-new look, but how exactly do you take a good photo of your client’s hair for Instagram? Well, you don't need a fancy camera to take beautiful photos of your salon business.

With just a smartphone and a few simple tricks, you can create gorgeous content that will make your business stand out. Here's how.....

So what makes a great photo?

Lighting. Lighting. Lighting!

You might want to consider using natural light when taking photos of hair.

Natural light is usually more flattering on people's skin, which is going to be important if you're taking photos that include faces. If you hold your phone at an angle where the light hits your subject, you will be able to capture a bright and airy picture.

“Use ‘portrait’ mode or apps that blur the background so the hair is the main focus.

If you're taking photos from above (i.e. if your subject is sitting down), move closer to the window than usual—the more sunlight you have, the better!

Take multiple photos from different angles.

This gives you more choices later to showcase the best photos you can.

Just remember to take multiple photos of before and after hair shots as it looks best if you use the same angles when matching up the images for comparison.

The background is super important

Stick to one style of background throughout all of your photos—it'll have the highest impact when placed next to each other.

We recommend taking before and after pictures on the same background for this reason. They just look great when compared to each other…it gives you a style!

For best results, try to keep your background white or a solid colour, as this will allow the whole focus to be on the hair and not the clutter in the background.

And of course, white reflects light evenly and a plain background makes the image a lot easier to edit!

Capture your unique vibe

Show off the inside of your salon and snap some photos while you're open for business.

Take photos that showcase any unique aspects of your salon's ambience and layout. If you've got cool plants or a creative way of displaying products, this is what will really make people excited about coming into your space.

Try framing shots of staff and stylists working or even just smiling!

This will help people get a sense of what it's like to be in your space.

Consistency is key.

You want your salon to look professional, so make sure you're using the same colour scheme for your photos.

This is where you can get your brand to shine through!

Pick out a few coordinating colours that reflect your brand and use them throughout your social media content.

That doesn't mean every image needs to be filled with those colours, but it does mean that you should try to pick out one or two photos that you can edit to include them, so they keep popping up in people's feeds.

Practice makes perfect

Our final take-home tip is to have some fun and mix up your shots. It can be easy to get stuck in a rut, taking the same photos over and over again with only slight variations in each.

Varying your shot selection encourages Instagram users to explore your stream, and ensures that they won't see the same photo over and over again.

The more you vary your shot selection, the more variety you include in your feed—and that's a win-win for both you and your followers!
